The new Apple A12 Bionic - Is it the best processor ever?
In a recent event by Apple, they unveiled their latest iPhones of 2018 (read here). While almost all the specifications of the new iPhone XS, iPhoneXS Max are similar to their predecessors the only noticeable difference is the chip being used within them both. While its predecessor used Apple A11 Bionic, the new iPhones use the newer Apple A12 Bionic.
Let's have a look at the new A12 Bionic.
Apple A12 Bionic
The A12 is said to be the smartest and best processor ever made and implemented in an iPhone. First off, it is made on 7 nm process which according to company is the first to do so. While Huawei already talked about its new processor the Kirin 980 which is too made on the 7 nm process but won't be shipped until this October. Having been built on 7 nm process, already gives it the edge on other chipset manufacturers in the market. Qualcomm, one of the major chipset manufacturing company for Android, have their best SoC till date, the SD845 launched already. It is built on 10 nm process. While its the most powerful chipset available for Android it still lags behind the Apple's A12 Bionic in terms of performance and that too at a considerable rate.
The A12 Bionic features similar core count and clusters as its predecessor did which is A11 Bionic. These are two high-performance and four power efficiency cores. The company claims that the high-performance cores are 40% more efficient and 15% faster than their predecessors. The low-performance cores feature a 50% power efficiency gain over the A11. The processor also features a major transistor gain over the A11. While the last year's smartphone chip from Apple came with 4.3 billion transistor, the A12 takes this upto 6.9 billion that is a 60% increase in the number.
It's with the A12's NPU that we get the real power upgrades of this year. The A11's Neural Engine has two cores, while the A12's Neural Engine increases it to eight. The A12's ISP will also collaborate with the Neural Engine to facilitiate the 2018 iPhone lineups's Smart HDR. So, what does it all mean and add up to? Finally it all be beneficial in faster app loading and better performance. But for a casual user it's not much of great deal but when it comes to heavy usage like heavy gaming or usage of AR will surely let you feel the prowess of A12.
